Why are pot magnets so strong?

Thanks to the steel pot, the magnetic field is concentrated, giving pot magnets a much higher holding force than comparable loose magnets. Learn more about the function, benefits, and applications of pot magnets.

Pot magnets

A pot magnet is a neodymium magnet in a steel cup. The steel concentrates the magnetic force on the contact surface, so a pot magnet holds much more than a loose magnet of the same size. The back is barely magnetic and the steel protects the magnet against impact. At Magnetenspecialist you will find pot magnets from Ø10 to Ø88 mm, with a holding force of approx. 4.5 to 107 kg.

Which mounting type do you need?

VersionHow to mount it
With countersunk holeScrew it in place with a countersunk screw; the head sits flush in the magnet
With threaded bushScrew a bolt into the internal threaded bush (M3 to M8)
With threaded studA protruding threaded stud that you secure with a nut (M3 to M8)
With internal threadScrew a bolt or threaded rod into the thread (M4 to M8)
For gluingA flat cup without hole or thread that you glue in place
With rubber coatingScratch-free with extra grip, Ø31 to Ø88 mm
With hook or with eyeHang something directly, or attach a rope or carabiner

Which size do you need?

  • Ø10 to Ø20 mm, approx. 4.5 to 11 kg: light fixings, displays, small doors and hatches.
  • Ø25 to Ø40 mm, approx. 10 to 25 kg: workshop, lighting, signs and panels.
  • Ø48 to Ø75 mm, approx. 37 to 107 kg: heavy industrial mounting and clamping.

Good to know

The stated holding force is measured perpendicular to a thick, flat steel plate. A thin plate, paint, rust or an air gap reduce the holding force. If you pull sideways, as with a magnet on a vertical wall, the magnet slides at a fraction of that force. So allow a generous margin. Read how holding force is determined or use the Magnet Advisor. Frequently asked questions

Why is a pot magnet stronger than a regular magnet?

The steel cup guides the magnetic field from the back and sides to the contact surface, so almost all of the force ends up at the front.

Can I use a pot magnet on a painted surface?

Yes, but the paint acts as a gap and reduces the holding force. If you do not want to damage the surface, choose a pot magnet with a rubber coating.

Does a pot magnet work on stainless steel?

Usually not. Most types of stainless steel are not or barely magnetic. Test it beforehand with any magnet.

When will my order be shipped?

Orders placed and paid for before 4 pm on working days are shipped the same working day if in stock. Free shipping within the Netherlands on orders over €45. Consumers have a 30-day cooling-off period.
