Which cube magnet do you choose?

Cube magnets from 3 to 15 mm: which size is suitable for magnetic boards, model making, or fasteners? Holding power by size, tips, and calculation tool.

A cube magnet is a neodymium magnet with six flat sides. This makes it useful if you want to place magnets tightly next to or on top of each other, for example on a magnetic board, in a model, or in a clasp. You choose based on holding power and the space you have available. Use the calculation tool at the bottom of this page or the Magnet Advisor if you want to know how much holding power your application requires.

Quick selection by application

Application Size Holding power (approx.)
Model making and small figures 3 x 3 x 3 mm 560 g (N50)
Magnetic boards and light clasps 5 x 5 x 5 mm 1.4 kg (N45)
Clasp mechanisms and prototypes 10 x 10 x 10 mm 5.5 kg
Technical applications 12.7 x 12.7 x 12.7 mm 9.6 kg
Heavier clasps and workshop 15 x 15 x 15 mm 12 kg

All sizes are in the cube magnet collection: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 12.7 and 15 mm.

Cube or block?

A cube is equal in all directions; a block has a length, width, and height. If you have a long or flat opening, choose a block magnet. If you have little space but want a lot of power, a cube is compact and powerful.

Things to consider

  • Holding power: the values are measured under ideal conditions on a flat steel plate. Read how holding power is determined.
  • Quality: the 3 mm cube is available in N35 and N50. N50 has more holding power for the same size. The 5 mm cube is available in N35, N45, and N52 (the stated holding power is for N45).
  • Temperature: all cube magnets are specified up to 80 °C.
  • Safety: small cubes can be swallowed; if you swallow multiple magnets, they can attract each other in the body and cause serious injury. Larger cubes can slam together hard; keep your fingers away.
