Custom-made magnets: how does it work?

Custom magnets are possible at Magnetenspecialist: a different size, grade, coating or magnetisation direction. The lead time for custom work is usually 6 to 8 weeks. Often we already have something suitable in stock, or we find a solution closer to home in Europe.

Short answer: yes, at Magnetenspecialist you can have neodymium magnets made to measure: a different size, grade (N35 to N52 or a temperature class such as SH), coating, hole or magnetisation direction. Custom work usually has a lead time of 6 to 8 weeks. We always think along first: our stock often already contains something suitable, and sometimes we find the right product closer to home in Europe, with a shorter lead time.

First: is custom work really necessary?

Many requests for custom magnets turn out to be solvable with a standard magnet. We have hundreds of sizes in stock, often shipped the same day. A slightly different size, an extra-thick magnet or a pot magnet instead of a loose magnet often gives the same result, without waiting time and without a minimum order. That is why for every request we first look at:

  • Our stock: does an existing size or version fit, possibly with a small change to your design?
  • European suppliers: some products are available faster or in smaller quantities within Europe.
  • Custom production: if it really has to be a custom size, we have it made.

What can be made to measure?

PropertyOptions
Shapedisc, block, ring, rod, segment (arc), with hole or countersunk hole
Dimensionsto drawing, with usual tolerances of approx. ±0.05 – 0.1 mm
GradeN35 to N52, and temperature classes M, H, SH, UH, EH
CoatingNiCuNi, zinc, epoxy, gold, or a plastic or rubber casing
Magnetisationaxial, diametrical, through the thickness, or with marked poles
Packagingwith spacers, per set, marked north/south

How does a custom request work?

  1. Your question: send us your application, the desired size or a drawing, the quantity and the environment (temperature, moisture).
  2. Thinking along: we check whether a stock item or a European product will do, or whether custom work is needed.
  3. Sample: where possible, you test first with a standard magnet or a sample.
  4. Quotation and production: for custom work, allow 6 to 8 weeks lead time.
  5. Delivery from our warehouse in Nuenen, the Netherlands.

What do you need for a good request?

  • where the magnet goes and what it has to do (hold, close, sensor, motor)
  • the available space and how you will fix it
  • the force needed, or the weight it has to hold
  • the environment: indoors, outdoors, moisture, temperature
  • the quantity per year or per batch

Frequently asked questions

What is the lead time for custom magnets?

Usually 6 to 8 weeks. If a suitable stock item exists, we often ship the same day.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

That depends on the size and version. Contact us; we will look for the best solution together, also for smaller quantities.

Can you help with the design?

Yes, we always do. A small design change sometimes makes a standard magnet possible, saving time and cost.
