Magnets in Warehouse & Logistics
In warehouses you use magnets to hang labels, signs, documents and tools on racks, cabinets and doors without drilling: hook and eye magnets for hanging, pot magnets with thread for signs, and small disc or rubber magnets for labels. Only works on steel.
Short answer: in warehouses and workshops you use magnets to hang signs, labels, documents, lamps, cables and tools on steel racks, cabinets, doors and beams, without drilling. For hanging use hook magnets and eye magnets, for signs pot magnets with thread or countersunk hole, and for light labels small disc or rubber magnets. Everything can be moved later when the layout changes.
Which magnet for which application?
| Application | Advice | Holding force (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Location labels, A4 documents on racks | disc Ø10 x 3 mm or cube 10 mm | 1.6 – 5.5 kg |
| Aisle and rack signs | pot magnet with threaded stud or countersunk hole, 2 – 4 per sign | 10 – 25 kg each |
| Lamps, fans, cables | hook or eye magnet Ø25 – Ø32 mm | 18 – 29 kg |
| Tools and scanners on a cabinet | rubber hook magnet Ø43 mm | approx. 14 kg |
| Floor and door markings on painted steel | rubber pot magnets | depends on size |
What to watch out for in a warehouse?
- Racks: the uprights are usually painted steel of 1.5 – 2 mm. A magnet only reaches part of its holding force there; choose generously. See how is holding force determined?
- Sideways loading: signs on a vertical side already slide at a quarter of the holding force. Allow 5 – 10 times the weight. See how many magnets do I need?
- Collisions and vibrations: forklifts and vibrating racks can work signs loose. Secure heavy signs above walkways mechanically.
- Aluminium racks are not magnetic.
Benefits
- no drill holes in racks (retaining warranty and load capacity);
- move labels and signs immediately when the layout changes;
- tools always in the same place.
