Bar magnets (51)
Neodymium rod magnets are cylindrical and are selected by diameter: this determines the holding force. We supply rod magnets from Ø2 to Ø12 mm with a holding force of approx. 240 g to 9.1 kg, in axial version (poles at the flat ends) and diametrically magnetized (poles on the sides).
Which rod magnet is right for your application?
- Model building, displays and electronics: Ø2 to Ø4 mm, up to approx. 1 kg.
- Small latches and flaps: Ø5 to Ø8 mm, approx. 1.4 to 4 kg.
- Cabinet doors and furniture building: Ø10 to Ø12 mm, approx. 5 to 9 kg.
- Sensors and rotating applications: diametrically magnetized rods.
- Designs with recessed holes, such as 3D prints: a rod magnet fits in a round drilled or printed hole.
A longer rod is barely stronger; choose a larger diameter for more holding force. Read Which rod magnet do you choose? or calculate how much holding force you need with the Magnet Advisor. The stated holding force is measured under ideal conditions; in practice, it is lower. Read how holding force is determined.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the poles of a rod magnet?
In an axially magnetized rod at the two flat ends; these pull the strongest. In a diametrically magnetized rod on the long sides, convenient for sensors and rotating applications.
Is a longer rod magnet stronger?
Barely. The holding force is mainly determined by the diameter. A longer rod does help if the magnet needs to be built in deeper or work at a greater distance.
How do I build in a rod magnet?
Drill or print a hole that is just slightly larger than the diameter and fix the magnet with a two-component adhesive, such as UHU Plus epoxy adhesive. Do not press it in with force: neodymium is brittle.
Are rod magnets suitable for sensors?
Yes, they are often used to switch a reed contact or Hall sensor. For rotating applications, such as an encoder, you choose a diametrically magnetized rod. Test the distance in your own setup.
Are small rod magnets safe in the home?
Keep them out of reach of children. If more are swallowed, they can attract each other in the body and cause serious injury. Seek medical attention immediately if swallowed.
Can you supply rod magnets for a series product or sensor?
Yes. For a series, we make a quote and reserve stock, and you order on account with a purchase order. If you need a different length or magnetization, we will think along about customization. Business ordering.
