Magnetic strip (4)
A magnetic strip is a flexible, self-adhesive neodymium strip that allows you to easily attach non-magnetic objects to steel. You cut the strip to size, stick it onto your panel, display, or door, and you're done. Our magnetic strips have an adhesive force of 450 g/cm², making them significantly stronger than regular ferrite magnetic tape, while being only 1.5 mm thick.
What are magnetic strips?
Magnetic strips are elongated, flexible strips that are magnetic themselves. They consist of neodymium (NdFeB) in a flexible carrier, with a strong adhesive layer (3M 9448A) on the back. All strips are 1000 mm long and can be cut to the desired length with scissors. The magnetization runs in narrow lanes of alternating north and south poles along the strip. This allows it to adhere very well to steel upon direct contact.
Magnetic strip, magnetic tape, or magnet tape?
There is no difference: magnetic strip, magnetic tape, and magnet tape are different names for the same product. However, there is an important difference compared to steel tape (also known as ferro tape or metal tape). Steel tape is not magnetic itself but serves as a base to which magnets can attach. A magnetic strip is the magnet itself and attaches to steel.
What can you use magnetic strips for?
A magnetic strip is ideal if you want to attach a non-magnetic object to a steel surface without drilling or screwing. For example:
- displays, presentation boards, and notice boards
- cabinet doors and hatches against a steel frame
- radiator foil against the radiator
- a memo pad or calculator against steel office furniture
- photos, cards, and posters on the refrigerator or a magnetic wall
For larger panels and heavier objects, choose a wider strip.
Which magnetic strip do you need?
All magnetic strips have the same adhesive force per square centimeter. Therefore, you choose primarily based on width: the wider the strip, the larger the contact surface and the more weight it can support.
| Width | Weight per meter | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| 10 mm | 75 g | narrow edges and light objects |
| 15 mm | approx. 113 g | light to medium-weight objects |
| 20 mm | 150 g | displays, boards, and doors |
| 30 mm | 230 g | larger panels and heavier objects |
How much adhesive force do you need?
Calculate using the surface area of the strip. A piece 20 mm wide and 10 cm long has a surface area of 20 cm² and therefore an adhesive force of approximately 9 kg. This is a laboratory value, measured perpendicularly on thick, bare steel. In practice, the adhesive force is lower, especially on thin or painted steel, or if the object can slide along the surface. Therefore, be generous with your calculations. Are you in doubt? Use the Magnet Advisor or contact us.
How to apply a magnetic strip
Clean the surface so it is dry and free of grease, and apply the strip at a temperature of at least 10 °C. Press it firmly along its entire length and then leave it undisturbed so the adhesive can bond properly. This prevents air bubbles and peeling. The adhesive has a shelf life of approximately 6 months, so it is best to use the strip within that period.
Indoor or outdoor?
Magnetic strips are intended for indoor use, at temperatures between 10 and 90 °C. Neodymium is not rust-resistant, so they are not suitable for outdoor use, bathrooms, or other damp environments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you cut a magnetic strip to size yourself?
Yes. You can easily cut the strip with scissors or trim it to the desired length with a sharp knife.
Can you stick individual magnets onto a magnetic strip?
No. Individual magnets will interfere with the strip's magnetization and weaken it. If you want to create a surface to which magnets will stick, use steel tape or another ferromagnetic base.
Does a magnetic strip lose its strength over time?
Not noticeably under normal use. Heat above 90 °C or strong magnets placed on the strip can, however, permanently reduce its strength.
How do you store magnetic strips?
Store them in a dry place at room temperature without folding them, and keep them away from other magnets. It is best to use them within approximately 6 months so that the adhesive remains effective.
How do you clean a magnetic strip?
Use a dry or slightly damp cloth and avoid using solvents near the adhesive layer. Allow the strip to dry thoroughly afterwards.
How are multiple meters supplied?
You will receive a separate 1-meter roll for each meter ordered. If you order 3 meters, you will receive 3 rolls.
Do I get a discount for larger quantities?
Yes. For magnetic strips, you automatically receive tiered discounts (bulk discounts) per 1-meter roll: 8% off for 3 rolls or more, 15% for 10+, 22% for 25+, and 28% for 50+ rolls. Do you need even larger quantities, or are you ordering as a wholesaler or business? Request a quote.
More self-adhesive magnets can be found under self-adhesive magnets. Orders placed and paid for on business days before 16:00 will be shipped the same business day, provided they are in stock.
