Self-adhesive magnets (16)
You can attach a self-adhesive magnet without drilling or screwing: just peel off the protective film and stick it onto the component that needs to become magnetic. At Magnetenspecialist, you will find self-adhesive neodymium disc magnets (Ø10 to Ø22 mm), block magnets (20 to 40 mm long), and magnetic strips that you can cut to size yourself. Ideal for displays, interior design, advertising, signage, and creative projects.
What is a self-adhesive magnet?
A self-adhesive magnet is a thin neodymium magnet with a strong 3M adhesive layer on one side. The glue provides attachment to your component, while the magnet provides the connection to steel or to a second magnet. This allows you to make a panel, door, or sign magnetically detachable, for instance, without drilling holes in the material.
What types of self-adhesive magnets are available?
| Type | Sizes | Holding power | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disc magnet | Ø10 to Ø22 mm, 1 to 2 mm thick | approx. 220 to 890 g | Small attachments, closures, displays, crafts |
| Block magnet | 20 x 10 to 40 x 12 mm, 1 mm thick | approx. 230 g | Elongated edges, signs, labels |
| Magnetic strip | 10 to 30 mm wide, 1 m long | 450 g/cm² | Long attachment surfaces, panels, presentation materials |
We also offer a magnetic business card holder to stick onto a business card or brochure.
How strong is a self-adhesive magnet?
Self-adhesive magnets are thin and therefore intentionally intended for light applications. A 1 mm thick disc magnet holds approx. 220 to 240 grams, while a thicker 2 mm one holds up to approx. 890 grams. This is more than enough for a sign, door, or display, but not for heavy objects. The specified holding power applies perpendicular to thick, flat steel; the magnet will hold less on a vertical wall, on thin or painted steel, or with an air gap. If you need more strength, choose a thicker magnet or a pot magnet. Still in doubt? Use the Magnet Advisor.
On which surfaces can you stick self-adhesive magnets?
The adhesive layer adheres best to smooth, hard surfaces such as metal, glass, hard plastic, and painted or laminated wood. Less suitable or unsuitable are soft plastics (such as PE and PP), silicone, wallpaper, fabric, and rough or porous surfaces like untreated wood or stone.
How to apply a self-adhesive magnet
Clean the surface so it is dry and grease-free, for example, using isopropyl alcohol. Apply the magnet at a temperature of at least 10 °C, press it firmly, and then leave it untouched for a while before putting any load on it so that the adhesive can bond properly. A magnet pulls hardest on its adhesive layer when you pull it straight off steel; therefore, it is better to slide or tilt it off.
Two magnets that attract each other
Do you want to have two objects close magnetically, like a door against a cabinet or two parts of packaging? Then you need two magnets, one with the north pole facing out and the other with the south pole facing out. In that case, please indicate in the order notes in your shopping cart that you want them "north against south," and we will take that into account. It works differently for magnetic strips: they are magnetized in narrow strips, meaning two strips only adhere well to each other if you lay them in the same direction.
Frequently asked questions
Can you customize self-adhesive magnets?
You can easily cut a magnetic strip to the desired length with scissors. You cannot saw, cut, or drill neodymium disc and block magnets: the material is brittle and the grinding dust is flammable. Therefore, choose the size that best fits your application.
How long does a self-adhesive magnet stay attached?
For years, provided the surface is clean and used indoors. The adhesive layer itself has a shelf life: it is best to use self-adhesive magnets within approximately 6 months of purchase and store them in a cool, dry place.
Can you remove a self-adhesive magnet without damage?
The 3M glue bonds strongly, so damage may occur when removing it from paint, wallpaper, or soft materials. Carefully warm the magnet with a hair dryer to soften the glue, then pry it off slowly. You can remove adhesive residue with isopropyl alcohol or an adhesive remover.
Are self-adhesive magnets suitable for outdoor use?
No. Neodymium will rust due to moisture, and the adhesive layer will come loose due to cold, humidity, and temperature fluctuations. For outdoor use, it is better to choose a magnet with an epoxy coating and secure it with a weather-resistant two-component glue, such as UHU Plus.
Up to what temperature can I use them?
Neodymium self-adhesive magnets are suitable up to approx. 80 °C, and magnetic strips up to 90 °C. At higher temperatures, the magnet permanently loses strength and the adhesive becomes soft.
Do I get a discount for larger quantities?
Yes. You automatically receive bulk discounts of 8%, 15%, 22%, or 28%, depending on the quantity. For small self-adhesive magnets, the discount starts from 50 pieces; for magnetic strips, it starts from as few as 3 rolls. You can see the tiers per product on the product page. Do you need even larger quantities, or are you ordering as a wholesaler or business? Request a quote.
When will my order be shipped?
Orders placed and paid for on business days before 4:00 PM will be shipped the same business day if in stock. Free shipping within the Netherlands for orders over €45. Consumers have a 30-day reflection period.
